Privacy policy

Your pictures never leave your device.

Who we are

glyf is made by Rojab Khan (“we”, “us”). This policy covers the glyf website and studio at www.glyf.ink and the glyf app for Android. You can reach us at irojabkhan@gmail.com.

The short version

  • Your pictures and videos are processed on your device. They are never uploaded to us or anyone else.
  • There are no accounts, no advertising, and we never sell or share your data.
  • The Android app collects no data at all: no analytics, no tracking, and no network requests of its own.
  • The website uses Google Analytics to count visits. It never sees your pictures.

Photos and videos you open

Everything you open in glyf is decoded and turned into text art by code running on your device, in your browser on the website and inside the app on Android. Large photos are scaled down on your device before use. Videos on the website live only in the open tab and are gone when you close it.

In the Android app you choose photos with Android's own photo picker, so the app can only see the photos you pick, never the rest of your library.

What's stored on your device

Website: when you save a recipe, its name, tags, settings and a small thumbnail are written to your browser's local storage, together with a copy of the photo if you uploaded one. Videos are never stored. Delete a recipe in the studio, or clear this site's data in your browser, to remove it.

Android app: each edit you make (its settings, a small thumbnail and, if you picked one, a copy of your photo) and any looks you save are kept in the app's private storage on your phone. Delete an edit or a look by long-pressing it; clearing the app's storage or uninstalling the app removes everything.

This data never leaves your device, so we can't see it, back it up or recover it.

Exports and sharing

Exports are made on your device. On the website they download straight to your computer. In the app you can save them to your phone's gallery or send them through Android's share sheet; what you share goes only to the app or person you choose, and from then on that app's own privacy policy applies.

Permissions the Android app uses

  • Photos: picking a photo uses Android's photo picker, which needs no permission on current Android versions. On older versions, Android asks for access to your photos for the same purpose.
  • Storage (Android 12 and older only): to save your exports to the gallery.
  • Vibration: for the small haptic ticks when you adjust controls.
  • Internet: included by the app framework. glyf itself sends nothing anywhere and contains no analytics, advertising or crash-reporting services.

Analytics on the website

The website uses Google Analytics, a service from Google, to understand how many people visit and which pages they find useful. It uses cookies and collects information such as the pages you view, the site that sent you, your device and browser type, and your approximate location (derived from your IP address). It never receives your images, videos or recipes, and we don't use it for advertising.

Google processes this data under the Google Privacy Policy and keeps it for no longer than 14 months. You can opt out with Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on, or by blocking cookies for this site. The Android app does not use Google Analytics or any other analytics.

What our host sees

The website (its pages, scripts, fonts, and the built-in sample photos and footage) is served by our hosting provider, Vercel. Like any web host, it may keep standard request logs (such as IP address, browser and time of request) for security and reliability.

Sharing and selling

We don't sell, rent or share your personal data. The only outside services involved are the ones named above: Google Analytics and our host on the website. The Android app uses none.

Security

Because your pictures and edits stay on your device, there is nothing of yours for us to store or lose. The website is served only over encrypted HTTPS connections.

Children

glyf is a general creative tool and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children; the app collects none from anyone.

Your choices and rights

You can delete anything glyf stores on your device at any time, as described above. Apart from website analytics and emails you send us, we hold no personal data about you. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access or delete data about you; email us and we'll help, including with any request about analytics data.

If how glyf handles data changes, we'll update this page and the date below. For the Android app, we'll also update its Google Play listing.
